A Real Runner?

Just a short post this morning before I head off into the day. Last night at the end of an 8 mile treadmill workout, I noticed that my second toe on my left foot was hurting. Took off my shoes while stretching and saw that the nail is turning black & will soon fall off. I've heard of this happening to other distance runners at various points in their training - does this mean that I'm now a real runner? If we had a digital camera I'd SO post a picture right now...

  3. I've not had that happen, myself. Though I cut my toenails the other day and one hurt pretty badly, I wasn't sure why. When I cut it, pus started oozing out like a Mack truck leaking oil. Same kinda thing, I suppose.

You should seriously consider adding weight training to your regiment 2-3 times per week. It will build your core, increase your metabolism, and greatly reduce risk of injury. I've been lifting as part of my training, and it generally doesn't take more than an hour. High reps, low weight - 2 sets of 15 on everything.

Let me know if you want, I can hook you up with a pretty good schedule that won't get you injured or beefed up.

  4. I have been doing some basic weight training on MWF along with my marathon training. Okay, so I'm using Culligan water bottles for front squats & one set of dumbbells for other stuff, but it's still weight training. Tough to do it in such a cramped basement, but we're making it work. I know I should do more core stuff, but I freakin' HATE core workouts. Kinda like quitting the smokes - I know I gotta, but until I convince myself that the reward is worth the discomfort I'll never succeed at it.

  5. LOL, whoa, you're still smoking...? Man oh man, I've done that bit before! Training & smoking, that is.

Lemme tell ya, though, bailing on the tobacco AND caffeine has led me to run much faster at much lower heart rates. I'm not where I want to be by any stretch, but I'm getting there faster...

I, too, hate core training - especially in a university weight room (okay, ANY weight room) filled with meatheads. You should see the looks I get with a 25 on each side for bench press...

  6. Oops, sorry! Didn't mean to imply that I'm still smoking - I'm not. But I DO still need my cuppa joe in the morning and I think quitting the liquid consciousness would be harder than it was to kick the smokes. Is that clearer?

As to the weights, I hate it because I don't like doing crunches or any of those workouts - it friggin HURTS! The bench press & other stuff is fine, it's the abs & back stuff that sucks, and unfortunately, that's what needs the most work for me. But I am getting better.
